Chelsea reportedly refused the chance to sign Matheus Cunha ahead of his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to the Evening Standard, both the Blues and Arsenal snubbed Atletico Madrid’s attempt to offload their striker.

Cunha was apparently offered to the Premier League pair, yet neither fancied taking the forward on board.

This is something of a slight on the 23-year-old.

Chelsea overlook Matheus Cunha

Chelsea and Arsenal are seemingly in the market for a new attacker, following injuries to their respective front men.

Armando Broja is likely out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus could miss a decent chunk of the campaign thanks to undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

Yet, Cunha was clearly not viewed as the solution for the London rivals.

Based on his statistics this term, it’s understandable to see why.

In 17 games for Atletico, the Brazilian failed to score once.

Admittedly, he had started just two La Liga matches before joining Wolves on loan, a deal that could be turned permanent for £40m.

Julian Lopetegui’s need for additional firepower is even greater than that of Chelsea or Arsenal’s.

Lopetegui took over the lowest scorers in the English top flight when he replaced Bruno Large in the Molineux dugout in November.

He will be praying Cunha can shake off his Spanish sour patch and shoot Wolves out of the relegation zone.
