Report: Chelsea working on potential deal for versatile defender
Chelsea have a “firm” interest in Inter Milan right wing-back Denzel Dumfries with the Italian club being under pressure to raise funds this summer, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The report claims that Dumfries, alongside Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana, is high among the targets being pursued by Chelsea.
Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek provided the cover for Reece James at Chelsea last season, but the former’s potential exit, amid links with Barcelona, may have influenced the club’s transfer decisions.
Inter, whose negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential deal for Milan Skriniar stalled due to their asking price, reportedly also need to raise money this summer.
Ornstein’s colleague at The Athletic, Simon Johnson, added via Twitter that Thomas Tuchel wants a a player who can both be a back-up and provide competition for James while also covering for the right centre-back position when needed.
Dumfries mostly played as a right wing-back in Inter’s 3-5-2 system last season, so he should be able to adjust to Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 structure relatively easily if he is to join Chelsea.
The report did not mention any asking price from Inter, but the 26-year-old signed for the Italian club for £12.5 from PSV Eindhoven last year.
The Netherlands international is under contract at Inter until 2025 and registered five goals and four assists in Serie A last season.
