Report: Club have given £100k-a-week Chelsea player their word they'll sign him, he's asked Tuchel not to play him

Marcos Alonso has reportedly asked not to play for Chelsea again because a move to Barcelona is viewed as inevitable.

According to Sport, Chelsea are currently trying to sign Barcelona’s 25-year-old midfielder Frenkie de Jong in a transfer that would include Alonso in a player-plus-cash deal.

It is understood the Blues are willing to grant Alonso’s move to Barca even if they miss out on De Jong, though.

The report explains Chelsea would accept less than €10million (£8.5million) for Alonso, who’s won plenty of trophies during his six years at Stamford Bridge.

Apparently, Barca have given the 31-year-old defender their word that they’ll sign him in this summer window. Therefore, the left wing-back has asked Blues manager Thomas Tuchel not to play him to avoid injuries, despite the fact he’s still waiting in London for Barcelona to wrap up a deal for him.

Chelsea kickstart their Premier League season later today away to Everton, so it’ll be interesting to see if Alonso is named in the match day squad.

In fairness, the Spaniard’s position at full-back is one area of the squad where Tuchel is blessed with options. For example, both Ben Chilwell and new signing Marc Cucurella could be fighting against each other to start on Saturday at left wing-back.

You’d like to think Alonso would be professional enough to play if Tuchel was desperate. Everything points towards him exiting soon, though.

The £100,000-a-week star has had a memorable career with plenty of ups and downs, which is why he’s a player that many supporters won’t ever forget.

Barcelona are going to find out that there’s definitely a vulnerability to his game defensively in terms of a lack of pace and sometimes one-on-one situations. However, his attacking output can be brilliant from his side of the pitch. He’s a proven winner that on his day is quite the player, too.

As for the De Jong interest, Chelsea could get a win-win if he joins and Alonso moves the other way. It’s been claimed Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel are massive fans of his.
