Report: Club still waiting for Chelsea's response to their interest in 21-year-old
Serie A side Spezia are still waiting for an answer from Chelsea on the availability of versatile defender Ethan Ampadu this summer, according to Sky Italia.
The 21-year-old was part of the Chelsea first-team group that travelled to the United States for a pre-season tour and part of the second group that played in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Udinese on Saturday.
There remain doubts over his future at the club, however, particularly since he was one of the three players who have yet to be assigned shirt numbers so far.
The Evening Standard recently claimed that Chelsea are trying to sign three more players; two more centre-backs and a right-back.
Since Ampadu have played as a centre-back in the pre-season games, Tuchel’s reported pursuit of two new players in this position could affect the Wales international’s Chelsea first-team chances.
Sky Italia claims that Spezia are still waiting for a response from Chelsea over a potential deal for Ampadu, which suggests the London club have yet to turn down the approach.
Ampadu seems to be an ideal squad player to provide cover for Thiago Silva, who is not expected to play twice a week at 37.
This could change, of course, if Chelsea sign two more centre-backs, as the Evening Standard claimed they plan to do.
