Report: Manchester United could make move for Chelsea star in summer

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger could be an option for Manchester United who are looking to sign a “world-class” centre-back in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

A new centre-back, according to the report, will be high on Manchester United’s list of targets in the summer.

Harry Maguire’s underwhelming form reportedly plays a part in the reported transfer plans which would only put his future at the club into further doubt.

This is certainly interesting considering they reportedly paid a record fee of £80million for the former Leicester City star.

Among the possible targets mentioned by the report is soon-to-be out-of-contract Chelsea man Rudiger.

With only months left in his contract, it remains unclear whether the Germany international and the Blues can reach an agreement over the extension, particularly after Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell the club.

The focus is now surely on the future of the club rather than contract talks.

Questions over Rudiger’s Chelsea contract talks

As suggested by The Telegraph earlier, Rudiger had been closer to staying at Chelsea before Abramovich’s statement.

The former AS Roma player has proved to be one of, if not the most influential player at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel in the past year.

A couple of weeks ago, the player himself suggested that he had yet to make any decision.

“I look at it day to day,” Rudiger said about his contract situation after the Club World Cup triumph in Abu Dhabi.

“All the rest is talk.”

Losing Rudiger, who just turned 29 on Thursday, would likely lead to Chelsea’s having to spend big on a possible replacement.

As it stands, Malang Sarr has been Tuchel’s second-option for the left-sided centre-back role, and, unlike Rudiger, he is arguably not ready to be a regular starter yet.
