Report: Newcastle have held talks over signing 'fantastic' player from Chelsea in the past week

Newcastle United have reportedly been in contact with Chelsea in the past week over the possible signing of Ross Barkley this month.

According to 90min, the Magpies are planning a potential swoop for the out of favour player.

Barkley on the market

Barkley has become little more than a backup to Thomas Tuchel’s main characters this campaign.

His one and only start in the Premier League arrived against Burnley at the beginning of November.

A handful of appearances here and there in the cup competitions is all the 28-year-old has to show so far.

Ironically, one of his best performances of the term came behind closed doors at Cobham.

“With him (Barkley), and with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, I’m super happy. We had the in-house game here and the two did fantastic,” revealed Tuchel in September.

Other than that, Barkley has been rotting away on the bench, wondering when or if an opportunity will ever arise again.

Where could Barkley go?

Justifiably, the midfielder will surely be looking for a fresh challenge away from Stamford Bridge, even if it means another loan move.

Everton have been mentioned as one of the Premier League clubs who could offer him a lifeline.

A return to the city where Chelsea originally plucked the Englishman from would certainly make sense on a nostalgic level, not to mention a footballing one.

However, it appears another of Rafa Benitez’s former employers are also in the hunt for Barkley’s signature.

Newcastle the big spenders so far

Now with the financial backing from their new owners, Newcastle want to splash the cash in January to help Eddie Howe’s quest to avoid relegation.

They have already acquired the services of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, with several other experienced names also being linked.

Even despite the Toon Army’s perilous position towards the bottom of the table, the thought of playing regularly must be enticing for Barkley.

Plus, if he can help Newcastle beat the drop, he will be cherished by one of the greatest fan bases in the country.

If that’s not incentive enough, we are not sure what is.
