Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez has not given up on joining Chelsea after being personally informed of the club’s decision not to sell him this summer, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

The Blues reportedly made an offer worth €50million (£43.1m) for the Alvarez on Wednesday and are still waiting for the green light for Ajax.

Ajax, however, are reportedly against selling such an important player, especially given the Eredivisie transfer window is already closed which means they would not be able to bring in a replacement.

De Telegraaf claims that Ajax technical director Gerry Hamstra and his right-hand man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has already explained that a transfer is “non-negotiable” for this particular reason in a meeting at Johan Cruijff ArenA.

However, the 24-year-old, who reportedly refused to train on Thursday to try to force a move, is clearly keen on the potential move and has repeatedly pushed the club to accept the offer during the talk.

The report mentions that Alvarez feels that it is unfair that several Ajax players were given the permission to leave.

The midfielder is said to be afraid that such an opportunity may not come around again as he reportedly considers Chelsea as one of his dream clubs.

The Blues, on the other hand, clearly need a reinforcement, particularly in the number six role.

Jorginho has started in this position in each of their first Premier League matches, while the likes of Billy Gilmour and Ethan Ampadu have been linked with late exits.

But Ajax will obviously have the final say over Alvarez’ situation.

The Mexico international is under contract with the Eredivisie champions until 2025.
