Report: Premier League club interested in out-of-favour £71.6m Chelsea player

Newcastle United are interested in Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who remains the number two at Stamford Bridge, according to Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old, according to the report, is one of the goalkeepers in Newcastle’s list of potential summer goalkeeper targets.

The list also features Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, and West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone.

Arrizabalaga has lost his regular spot at Chelsea since the arrival of Edouard Mendy in 2020.

While he has been very reliable when called upon under Thomas Tuchel, he is arguably too expensive and earns too much to be a backup goalkeeper.

A report from The Telegraph claimed that the Spain international is among the highest-earning players at Chelsea despite playing a less prominent role.

The Blues have tried to offload him in the previous transfer windows, to no avail.

The club’s wanting to recoup as much as possible of the £71.6million they paid to Athletic Bilbao for the goalkeeper in 2018, as suggested by the Daily Mail report, might have explained the struggles in selling him.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, Newcastle would reportedly ask for a loan deal.

This would help reduce Chelsea’s wage bill significantly but would also put them under more pressure to sell in the remaining years of Arrizabalaga’s contract with the club, which runs until 2025.

Arrizabalaga’s improved form under Tuchel has reportedly attracted other potential suitors, though, including Atletico Madrid, which may help Chelsea get better deals in the summer.
