Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has urged Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell to make the big move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Back in December last year, Blues legend Ashley Cole told talkSPORT that he’d “love to see Chilwell at Chelsea” as he saw qualities in the Leicester defender and believed he was “a Chelsea fan”.
The speculated January transfer, however, did not happen.
Now almost six months later, another former Blues star Joe Cole has backed Chelsea to bring the 23-year-old to West London.
Cole told the Mail on Sunday: “Similar to Werner, he fits the ethos – he is young, he’s hungry, he’s explosive and athletic.
“I think he’s got a lot of talent, if he comes to Chelsea, working with the group there – in Brendan he’s got a great manager and a great team up at Leicester. But Chelsea’s a step up from Leicester.
“I know they are sitting above Chelsea in the table at the moment but having the opportunity to work with Frank and improve would be immense for him.
“My advice would be to keep performing, keep consistent, and if he does do that he can be England’s left-back and if he does come to Chelsea, Chelsea’s left-back for many years.”
As much as Cole’s words might convince Chilwell, the transfer decision will eventually be on Leicester’s hands.
Chilwell is under contract until 2024 and an earlier report from Sky Sport suggested the Foxes will not listen to offers even in the region of £50million.
If he handed in a transfer request, however, it would be an entirely different story.
