The real reason why Chelsea decided not to bid for Harry Kane this summer

Chelsea were briefly linked with a move for Harry Kane earlier this summer – before the Tottenham legend joined Bayern Munich.

It was talkSPORT who claimed that Mauricio Pochettino was keen on a reunion with the England international at Stamford Bridge.

A story from the Telegraph even added that Chelsea were put on red alert after hearing that the 30-year-old was building a new house close to Cobham.

Ultimately, no bid was made for the striker – with ESPN now explaining why that is.

So, why did Chelsea not bid for Harry Kane? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, it is said that Tottenham didn’t want their all-time record goalscorer to leave at all, but were willing to entertain a move overseas if he did push for an exit.

Spurs had no intention whatsoever of negotiating with a Premier League rival, which ESPN believe led to Chelsea – and also Manchester United – simply not bothering with a bid.

Tottenham also decided to engage in talks with Bayern Munich as it allowed the north Londoners to stay in control of where Kane goes.

Had England’s record goalscorer ran down the final 12 months of his contract, he would have been able to join any of Tottenham’s rivals on a free transfer next summer, with Spurs having no say in the situation.

Harry Kane to Chelsea seemed unlikely regardless

Even if Kane was able to choose any club this summer, it feels unlikely that he would’ve picked Chelsea based on what some sources are claiming.

According to Matt Law of the Telegraph – who adds that he has interviewed Kane many a time – the Londoner would never do anything to risk staining his legacy at Tottenham, something he values very much.

Joining Tottenham’s bitter rivals Chelsea would be something that puts that legacy at risk, so a move to Stamford Bridge always felt unlikely for Bayern Munich’s new No.9 this summer.
