'Top class player' is keen to join Chelsea if they make a bid for him this summer - journalist

Barcelona’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could reportedly be interested in joining Chelsea this summer.

Aubameyang, 33, is a new attacker whose name has been circulating around the Chelsea transfer rumour mill during the last 24 hours.

Fabrizio Romano shared on Wednesday night that the Blues were lining up a potential swoop for the ex-Arsenal centre-forward, who only joined Spanish giants Barcelona on a permanent transfer in February.

A fresh update from Telegraph journalist Matt Law is an intriguing one.

According to Law on Twitter, Chelsea do hold an interest in Aubameyang right now without actually making any contact to sign him.

However, the African striker would be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge if Thomas Tuchel’s side decide to make a transfer swoop.

It’s quite a significant development that Aubameyang is keen on the idea of returning to London, only this time he would be in Chelsea colours rather than Arsenal red.

His 2021/22 season was split into two parts with Arsenal and Barcelona, but he still ended up with 20 goals in total to his name.

Romelu Lukaku is the latest victim to suffer Chelsea’s No.9 curse when you look at his form last year, which has resulted in him returning to Inter Milan on loan this summer.

But is Premier League proven Aubameyang the man to lead the line successfully at the Bridge?

Ex-Chelsea boss and current Everton manager Frank Lampard delivered a glowing assessment of Aubameyang a couple of years ago:

“He (Aubameyang) is a top class player and the second goal showed the speed and class of a player who wins games like this,” Lampard said in August, 2020.

There’s no doubt he’s been a super talent over the years when it comes to scoring goals and tormenting defences, but Chelsea need to weigh up if he’s still capable of delivering the goods in England’s top division.
