Former Chelsea star Timo Werner is close to securing a controversial return to the Premier League.

That is according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Apparently, Tottenham are ‘on the verge’ of signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig in this January transfer window.

It is understood that Spurs are very close to signing the 27-year-old forward on a short-term loan, but there’s still discussions with Leipzig about whether any deal may include a permanent option clause.

Werner is struggling for regular starts this campaign in a Leipzig side that sit fourth in the Bundesliga and through to the Champions League last 16.

He only left Chelsea back in the summer of 2022 after a turbulent time at Stamford Bridge, but he may soon be playing for London rivals Spurs.

Sky’s Florian Plettenberg has shared on Saturday morning the breaking transfer news regarding Werner.

He wrote on X: “Timo Werner: He’s on the verge to join Spurs on a 6-months-loan! It’s very hot!

“Leipzig and Tottenham in final negotiations today. More details have to be clarified (Option to buy…)

“The 27-year-old is ready to leave the training camp of RB Leipzig soon.”

It’s strange enough watching Kai Havertz perform every week in Arsenal colours. This could take even longer getting used to Werner in a Spurs kit.

We know that Werner often divided opinion during his two years at Chelsea, but a section of the fanbase were always loyal to him and huge admirers.

The German speedster scored 23 goals and made 21 assists in 89 Chelsea appearances, so it wasn’t all bad for him in West London. He played an important role in winning the Champions League in 2021, too!

Our early prediction is that he could do well in Ange Postecoglou’s chaotic side with his pace and movement.

Bild claimed in November that Werner didn’t enjoy aspects of his time in England so a return to the Premier League is unlikely. However, it sounds like the player has had a change of heart.
