Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in one Chelsea player looks to be cooling a bit.
Tottenham have been linked with Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah.
However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the latter has fallen down Spurs’ shortlist as they prioritise other central defenders.
Chalobah has not played a game for Chelsea this season because of injury, but when the 24-year-old returns to full fitness, he still faces a real task getting into Mauricio Pochettino‘s team.
Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are the fit centre-backs Pochettino currently has available to him, while Levi Colwill can play there as well with it being his natural position.
Trevoh Chalobah has fallen down Tottenham’s shortlist
Chalobah does not appear to be Tottenham’s No.1 target for the centre-half position going into the January transfer window.
Nevertheless, you would still expect the former England U21 international to leave Stamford Bridge soon.
Again, Pochettino has options in central defence and that will only increase when Wesley Fofana returns from injury.
As well as that, Chelsea are also thought to be considering signing another centre-back.
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues want to sign a new player for that position and have already contacted Sporting Lisbon over a deal for Ousmane Diomande.
Everything is pointing, then, towards one or two centre-half exits at Stamford Bridge next year, with Chalobah likely to be the first to go.
It is a shame given that Chalobah has come through the club’s academy and has helped the Blues in previous seasons.
Back in the 2021/22 campaign, Chalobah made 30 first-team appearances in all competitions under Thomas Tuchel, playing his part in Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup triumph.
For the sake of his career, though, it now looks like the Chelsea academy graduate will have to depart west London. It seems absolutely necessary for him to get game time.
