Liverpool are now trying to complete the signing of Romeo Lavia from Southampton quickly – in fear of Chelsea hijacking the deal.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano.
So, what is the latest on Chelsea target Romeo Lavia? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well, the Belgium international has been a target for Chelsea throughout the summer.
The Daily Mail believe Chelsea view Lavia as their primary alternative to Moises Caicedo, while the reliable Romano has even previously claimed that the Blues could sign both.
Now – however – Liverpool are pressing ahead with their pursuit of the Southampton No.45’s signature, after seeing a bid worth £37m rejected on Tuesday.
Romano believes the Reds are now preparing an improved offer worth £42.5m for Lavia, with add-ons taking the deal up to a total package of £45m.

The Italian journalist wrote on Twitter: “Understand Liverpool new formal bid for Romeo Lavia is almost ready — around £42.5m guaranteed fee plus £2.5m add ons up to total £45m package.
“Liverpool want to be fast as Chelsea are still interested in Lavia, keeping close eye. Arsenal gone quiet as Thomas could now stay.”
Chelsea now have to make a massive decision as Liverpool bid for Lavia
As aforesaid, Chelsea have prioritised Caicedo this summer, and talks to sign the Ecuador international appear to be the reason why the Blues haven’t explored deals for other midfielders.
However – according to the Guardian – discussions with Brighton have now hit a wall as the Seagulls demand £100m, while Chelsea do not want to spend more than £80m.

Therefore, Chelsea must decide whether to stick with Caicedo and continue haggling with Brighton, or take the bold decision to move on and get involved in the race to sign Lavia instead.
It is a crucial period in Chelsea’s transfer window, and hopefully, those on the recruitment team at Stamford Bridge make the correct decision.
