Harry Redknapp thinks that Sporting Lisbson frontman Viktor Gyokeres is a seriously good player amid links with Chelsea.

Viktor Gyokeres was impressing this time last year in the Championship with Coventry City, finishing last season with 22 goals across all competitions. It ended up earning him a move to Lisbon to join Portuguese giants Sporting in the summer.

The powerful centre-forward is now enjoying an outstanding debut campaign in Sporting colours, scoring 22 goals and making 10 assists in 25 appearances so far.

It’s no surprise that the Sweden international is becoming a popular name in the transfer rumour mill.

When discussing Gyokeres on the BBC’s Transnfer Gossip Daily podcast, Redknapp said: “I watched him last year scoring goals for fun. You thought what a goalscorer and what a finisher…

“[Clubs] sit on the fence and are scared to make a judgement. Yes, take him. He’s good enough. He’ll score goals. He scored at Coventry, he’ll score goals anywhere.

“No, he’s got to go somewhere else and then they’ve got to pay four times the money. There’s talent about down there.”

Harry Redknapp rates Chelsea target Viktor Gyokeres

Gyokeres has been strongly linked with Chelsea recently. In fact, there’s been rumours this month that explain Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already bid for him.

Portuguese newspaper Record recently claimed that Chelsea’s opening offer worth around €85 million (£73m) for Gyokeres was rejected by Sporting. The Liga NOS club insist that any potential buyers must cough up the full €100 million (£86m) release clause.

We understand hesitation from anyone when buying stars unproven at the Premier League level. It feels like everyone missed a real trick with Gyokeres at the start of the season, though.

Chelsea desperately need to sign a No 9 in 2024 that can guarantee them goals. Gyokeres would still feel like a real risk to us, especially at the new quoted valuation.
