Whether Chelsea actually tried to sign Harry Kane before Bayern Munich move

Harry Kane left Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich last year.

There, Harry Kane has been sensational, scoring 44 goals in 45 appearances last season. He is the kind of striker who could transform Chelsea.

Given the rivalry between Chelsea and Tottenham, though, the 31-year-old moving to Stamford Bridge always seemed extremely unlikely.

However, it does not look like that stopped the Blues from thinking about making a move for Kane during Graham Potter‘s short spell at the club.

Graham Potter wanted Harry Kane at Chelsea

Potter reportedly wanted Kane at Chelsea, as well as his England teammate and Arsenal star Declan Rice.

And according to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea looked into it. In the end, though, a deal was simply not possible.

On Substack, Phillips wrote: “SPTC sources have learned that Potter requested a pursuit of Declan Rice and Harry Kane. Of course, the latter was near impossible to get, but Chelsea did look into it.”

Potter did not get his hands on Kane or Rice, but Chelsea did make several signings during the 49-year-old’s one and only transfer window.

However, with players such as Mykhailo Mudryk arriving from outside of the Premier League, Chelsea’s transfer business presented more challenges than solutions, claims Potter.

Where would Chelsea have finished last season with Harry Kane?

Last term, Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League table, five points behind Aston Villa, who grabbed the final Champions League place.

With Kane’s goals, Chelsea would have easily made up those five points and then some.

Again, though, Tottenham were never going to sell their best player to their rivals, who had to watch him join Bayern in an £86m deal instead.

Nicolas Jackson is currently the man leading the line for Chelsea. He is obviously nowhere near Kane’s level, but he has not done a bad job for the Blues this season, scoring a brace in his side’s last away game.

Jackson was the opposite of greedy in Chelsea’s recent win against Brighton & Hove Albion, squaring the ball to Cole Palmer for an equaliser when he could have shot.
