Whether Chelsea could actually sell Reece James next summer after latest injury

This season is proving to be another one to forget for Chelsea captain Reece James.

Reece James started the campaign injured but returned to fitness last month. He was able to play three consecutive games in the Premier League against Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

It looked like he had put his hamstring problems behind him, but the defender has injured that muscle once again and missed Chelsea‘s 2-1 win against Leicester City on Saturday as a result.

James’ future now looks uncertain. Malo Gusto also missed the Leicester game because of illness, resulting in Wesley Fofana having to play at right-back.

What next for Reece James?

James will be hoping to return to full fitness as soon as possible and will be desperate to remain injury-free this time.

However, it looks like Chelsea are starting to lose a bit of patience. One source has told journalist Simon Phillips that the 24-year-old is likely to be on the market next summer.

On Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, he wrote: “One source has even said that they fully expect James to be up for sale in the summer.”

Despite competing for the same position, James and Gusto get along well, though the two have not actually done too much competing against each other because of the former’s injury hell.

Who could Reece James join?

It would be a bit harsh if Chelsea did decide to part ways with James. There is quite clearly nothing the Englishman can do about his injury problems.

However, if their mind is made up, then Real Madrid could be one option for him. James has been linked to the Spanish giants in the past and Dani Carvajal turns 33 in January. They need to start thinking about replacements for the club legend.

Of course, if James cannot stay fit, then there is a strong possibility that Real Madrid will not want to go near him.

At this stage, though, it would not be a complete shock if Chelsea did try to find a buyer for James. He is on big wages but rarely ever plays.
