Chelsea have reportedly agreed to the £17 million signing of Strasbourg defender Mamadou Sarr.
The Blues have been linked with several players in recent weeks but Sarr had not been on anyone’s radar, so the deal comes as a huge surprise.
He will spend the remainder of the 2024/25 season on loan at Strasbourg before joining up with his new teammates in the summer.

Mamadou Sarr was born in Martigues, France on August 29, 2005. He joined Lens, where his father once played, in 2012 and left for Lyon’s academy six years later.

Sarr is six feet, four inches tall (1.94 metres). He is the same height as fellow Frenchman Benoit Badiashile, with Tosin Adaradioyo the only taller outfield player in the Chelsea squad.

Sarr’s best position is centre-back. He is right-footed but can play on either side of a two-man pairing. The only position that he has some experience playing is defensive midfield.

Sarr only ever made three appearances for Lyon’s first team and spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at RWD Molenbeek in the Belgian Pro League.
Having signed for Strasbourg last summer, he has played 1,039 minutes across 12 Ligue 1 games, providing one assist and no goals. He will gain more experience in the remainder of the campaign.

Sarr has a transfer value of £6.77 million, according to Transfermarkt. This is significantly lower than the nearly £17m fee Chelsea have signed him for.
But it’s worth remembering that the Blues have paid for potential rather than current ability with the 19-year-old, and his value will rise exponentially with Premier League exposure.

Sarr has a current rating of 69 and a potential rating of 81 in EA Sports FC 25. His best attributes include strength (74), standing tackle (72) and sprint speed (70).
If the defender continues to shine at Strasbourg throughout the 2024/25 season, his overall rating will probably be upgraded to around 73 by the time the new game comes out in Autumn.
