Renato Veiga is a professional footballer who has become Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s fifth signing of the transfer window.
The Blues had already brought in Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer.
Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori could have been next but it now appears that he will be joining London rivals Arsenal.
Instead, Chelsea have completed a £12 million move for Veiga from Swiss Super League club FC Basel.

Renato Veiga was born in Lisbon, Portugal on July 29, 2003, and joined Sporting CP’s youth team seven years later (2010).

Veiga is six feet, three inches tall (1.90 metres), above average for a footballer. He is the same height as Chelsea players Lesley Ugochukwu and Axel Disasi.

One of the qualities that Chelsea must like about Veiga is his versatility. He is seen as an alternative to Calafiori because he can play on the left or in the centre of the defence. Yet, the 20-year-old has played most of his games as a defensive midfielder.

Veiga made 31 appearances for Sporting’s reserve team in the third tier of Portuguese football before going on loan to FC Augsburg. Veiga spent the second half of the 2022-23 season with the Bundesliga club and played 13 league games.
The versatile midfielder signed for Basel last summer for €4.6m and made an immediate impact in their first team. Veiga scored a free kick in his Swiss Super League debut as his side drew 2-2 with FC Zurich.

A defensive-minded player, Veiga’s statistics are not eye-catching – nor do they need to be. He played 23 times in the league last season, providing two goals and one assist.

Veiga has a current rating of 70 and a potential rating of 79 on EA Sports FC, as of July 2024. His best attributes include sprint speed (80, strength (72) and stand tackle (70).
The Portugal under-20 international will probably receive an upgrade to his rating in next season’s game due to his increase in stature, perhaps seeing him up to around 73.

Veiga has a transfer value of £2.5m, according to Transfermarkt, but that will only increase as he develops further. So, while £12m seems an overspend at this moment, it could turn out to be excellent value for money in years to come.

Veiga’s father, Nelson, was also a professional footballer. Playing for clubs in Portugal, Cyprus and Morocco, he made over 350 appearances throughout his career.
