Why Aston Villa and another Champions League club have backed off from signing Chelsea target Joao Felix

It looks like Chelsea are getting a free run at Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, who has become a target for the club.

Chelsea were interested in signing Joao Felix‘s Atletico Madrid teammate Samu Omorodion. However, after that deal collapsed, Chelsea switched their focus to Felix.

The Blues recently announced the arrival of Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it appears that they want to strengthen their attack further.

A move to Stamford Bridge this summer would see Felix make his second debut for Chelsea. The 24-year-old has already had one spell with the club after spending the second half of the 2022/23 season with them.

Aston Villa and Benfica cool interest in Joao Felix

Aston Villa and Felix’s former club Benfica were also thought to have been keen on signing the Portuguese attacker.

In fact, according to Sport, the two Champions League sides were the best positioned teams to land his signature this summer.

However, the same outlet claims that Villa and Benfica have now taken a step back because of Felix’s price tag.

It has been reported that Atletico are asking for £43m for Felix, which seems affordable for a Premier League club such as Villa. Nevertheless, it looks like they have cooled their interest.

Could Chelsea sign Joao Felix’s Portugal teammate Goncalo Ramos?

Bringing in Felix, who prefers to play behind or just off the striker, will not solve Chelsea’s issue up front. There, Enzo Maresca is currently lacking options.

This summer, the Blues have been linked with Felix’s compatriot, Paris Saint-Germain’s Goncalo Ramos. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has dismissed those links.

Instead, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen seems to be the more likely signing for Chelsea. Osimhen is wanted by Maresca, so it is certainly one to keep an eye on.

As for Felix, it looks like there is a good chance of him moving to Stamford Bridge. If that does happen, it will be interesting to see where the Portugal international plays, as Maresca already has plenty of attacking options.
