Why Chelsea have advantage over Man United in race to sign Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton is a player Chelsea have had on their radar for some time.

Of all the areas in this Chelsea side, the midfield is inarguably the strongest.

Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are top-quality options for Enzo Maresca, both crucial to how Chelsea play. Behind them, Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos are extremely promising young talents who will only improve.

But the Blues seldom rest on their laurels when it comes to recruitment, and are always open to pursuing young talents with loads of upside. Adam Wharton is exactly that.

With a player of this quality, there’s always going to be competition.

Man United have been crying out for a midfield addition to string Ruben Amorim’s system together. After their pursuit of Carlos Baleba failed, they have turned their attention to another mid-table midfield maestro.

As the Mirror reveals: “Those at Old Trafford were looking to add a midfielder in the summer, leading to their interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but failed to get a player through the door. They’re now linked with Wharton as they look to revive their fortunes.”

Man United are certainly in greater need of the Englishman’s services, but one of the 21-year-old’s key requirements to leave Selhurst Park is a step up to Champions League football. As it stands, he’s more likely to get there under Oliver Glasner than in Manchester.

That’s where Chelsea have the edge, as an established Champions League side.

The ‘Real’ competition for Wharton

If Wharton is to move within the Premier League, Chelsea appear the most likely destination, but there is a certain Spanish outfit who have made their interest in the Palace player known.

Real Madrid are the biggest draw in football, and the last club you want to be competing with in the market. AS claims Los Blancos are looking seriously at Wharton, writing: “His extraordinary performances for the Eagles have ended up convincing Xabi Alonso’s team and they maintain their short-term interest in the young English midfielder.

“Although Real Madrid will face the 2025-2026 season without a ‘plan B’ for Aurélien Tchouameni , a position for which Martín Zubimendi was the ideal candidate for months, Wharton’s name remains on Real Madrid’s agenda.”

But Madrid also want Enzo Fernandez. That, they have made very clear.

The Spanish giants usually get what they want when it comes to the transfer market, and despite their recent strategy of signing players out of contract, they seem to be prepared to splash some cash to fill the Toni Kroos-sized void in their midfield.

It could be that Chelsea are strong-armed into a Fernandez sale, but that could leave them free to sign Wharton in what would be a decent consolation. Whatever the case, United certainly don’t appear to be a threat in that regard.
