Why Chelsea may still be able to sign Matheus Cunha despite new Wolves contract

After impressing in the Premier League this season, Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has been linked to several top clubs, including Chelsea.

Last week, it was reported that Chelsea were looking at Matheus Cunha as they contemplate on whether to bring in a new attacker or not this month.

However, the 25-year-old is thought to be close to signing a new contract at Molineux, which would make a transfer in January complicated.

If Chelsea are still interested in Cunha in the summer, though, landing him then could very much be a possibility.

Matheus Cunha set to sign contract with release clause

Wolves find themselves just outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, meaning that they could drop out of the Premier League at the end of the season.

If that happens, it does not look like Cunha has any intention of remaining at Molineux and playing in the Championship.

According to GiveMeSport, Cunha has verbally agreed a new contract with Wolves that contains a release clause that can be triggered should the club go down.

Enzo Maresca wants a striker now, though, so may not be willing to wait until the end of the campaign to see what happens with Wolves and Cunha.

Matheus Cunha’s football IQ ‘sensational’

If Chelsea do go on to sign Cunha in the summer, then they will be getting a very intelligent footballer.

That is what former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards would say after praising his football IQ earlier this season.

Speaking about Cunha on BBC Match of the Day back in November, Richards said: “His football IQ is absolutely sensational. He’s the one who can unlock the doors. He finds the little pockets of space and makes the right decisions at the right times.”

Maresca could do with that right now, as his forward line has been very poor lately. Chelsea have only scored two goals in their last four games.

Nicolas Jackson has really struggled to find the back of the net, having scored just once in his previous six outings.

It does not look like Cunha will be the answer in January, though, as he closes in on a new contract at Wolves.
