Why Chelsea ‘walked away’ from signing Antoine Semenyo in the summer

Chelsea are one Premier League club who will probably not enter the race for Antoine Semenyo’s signature in January.

It has been widely reported that Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract that Chelsea and other sides can activate in the next transfer window.

However, with the Blues already possessing several talented wingers, a move in January seems highly unlikely.

Who is Chelsea’s best winger?

It is thought, though, that the club did look at the player during the summer. Chelsea fans remain split on Semenyo, with some preferring him to Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens.

Bournemouth wanted £100m for Antoine Semenyo

In March, journalist Simon Phillips reported that Chelsea had identified Semenyo as a key target ahead of the summer transfer window.

He has now claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Club World Cup winners made an enquiry for the 25-year-old but “walked away” after being quoted a £100m fee.

Instead, Chelsea went on to sign Garnacho and Gittens to strengthen their left wing, while Estevao Willian also arrived from Brazil to play on the right flank.

As well as Garnacho, Gittens and Estevao, Enzo Maresca also has Pedro Neto, who has been excellent this season.

The Portuguese scored the opener in Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Burnley over the weekend.

How Antoine Semenyo compares to Chelsea’s current wingers

For as good as he has been in the current campaign, Semenyo would be an upgrade on Neto. He would be Chelsea’s most productive winger overall.

The Ghana international has scored more goals and provided more assists than all of Chelsea’s current wide men.

Semenyo is older than Garnacho, Estevao and Gittens, however. If the trio can fulfil their potential, they should surpass the Bournemouth star.

Chelsea are likely to back them and Neto rather than sign Semenyo next year, which is good news for the Blues’ Premier League rivals, who probably need him much more. Of course, Chelsea are always capable of springing a surprise, so never say never.
