Chelsea are close to offloading Romelu Lukaku to Napoli, but the club will have to wait a little longer before the striker is finally off their books.

Napoli are set to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea after reaching an agreement with their English counterparts for the 31-year-old.

That agreement was reached earlier in the week, but Lukaku has not been able to have a medical with his future employers yet.

The reason why has now been shared on social media by journalist Florian Plettenberg, who still expects everything to eventually be finalised.

Romelu Lukaku still waiting to have Napoli medical

Chelsea fans will be desperate to see Lukaku depart Stamford Bridge for good. The Belgian is costing their club a lot of money and, of course, gave that infamous interview where he basically admitted that he never wanted to leave Inter Milan for Chelsea.

Supporters should get their wish soon, but it will not happen as early as today. According to Plettenberg, some details of the transfer still need to be sorted, preventing Lukaku from having his medical this weekend.

“Understand that Romelu Lukaku will not undergo his medical this weekend as some more details need to be arranged,” Plettenberg explained on X.

Chelsea rejected a bid for Lukaku from Napoli earlier this week, but there now seems to be an agreement in place, with just a few minor things to iron out.

Should Chelsea really be selling Romelu Lukaku to Napoli?

Given that Chelsea themselves are in the market for a centre-forward right now, some may feel keeping Lukaku instead of selling him to Napoli is something that should have been considered.

The problem is the Belgium international obviously does not want to be at the club, hence his two loan spells away from west London.

Now that Napoli have made an acceptable offer for Lukaku, Chelsea have no choice but to sell him.

In terms of natural centre-forward options, Enzo Maresca will have to go with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu this season, unless Chelsea can sign another striker before the transfer window closes.
