Brazilian national media deliver their verdict on Thiago Silva's World Cup display last night

Thiago Silva started and captained Brazil last night during their 2-0 win against Serbia at the World Cup. Brazilian newspaper Globo handed the Chelsea star a 7/10 rating for his contribution.

Brazil picked up three points during their opening match in Group G, with Tottenham’s Richarlison scoring twice in the second-half. He stole the headlines for pre-tournament favourites Brazil, especially for his stunning bicycle kick.

For Silva, he continues to defy expectation as a 38-year-old.

The Chelsea centre-half was solid at the heart of his nation’s defence, something fans at Stamford Bridge are used to seeing every week.

It’s quite remarkable that the South American enforcer is still able to perform and impress on the biggest stages.

Thiago Silva against Serbia

Chelsea’s inspirational defender did receive a fairly solid rating from Brazilian media back in his homeland after yesterday’s performance.

Globo wrote: “Sovereign before the giants of the Serbian attack. Well in anticipation and also when I need to go to direct combat. Important in the ball exit, he still took off a beautiful deep pass in the back of the defense to Vini (Vinicius Junior), who stopped at the goalkeeper.”

With Brazil’s attacking firepower, it’s easy to see why many are tipping them to go all the way in this year’s competition.

It’s amazing to have so much depth and quality in the forward areas, but they’ll still need to defend well against the best teams to win the World Cup.

Silva has proven he’s still capable of playing in a back four, albeit he’s most solid in a back three in Chelsea colours. It will help in the national side having Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos as his centre-back partner.

It’s going to be interesting to see how much longer the veteran defender can keep playing beyond the World Cup.

Football London claims that Chelsea are set to have hold conversations with Silva after the tournament about his future. His current deal is due to expire at the end of the season.
