Reports have claimed that there were some senior figures at Chelsea that had real doubts that Raheem Sterling was still at the level required.

According to The Athletic, some had doubts that his poor performances and returns last season were a sign that he was beginning to decline from the standard needed to play at the top.

This season so far has seemed to revolve entirely around Sterling, with him starting every game so far in the Premier League.

He has been the shining light of Mauricio Pochettino’s side too. This occurred in the opening two matches despite them not picking up wins.

However, last Friday against Luton saw him find the net twice and set up Nicolas Jackson for his first goal for the club.

This helped him pick up a fully deserved player of the match award, whilst also reminding everyone of his talents.

Chelsea figures had doubts about Sterling

It seems as if it was more than supporters he had to remind too. It has now been claimed that even some higher ups at the club were having their doubts about Sterling.

Considering he was brought in last summer to be the star of the side, it was perhaps understandable why there was some disappointment surrounding his contributions.

However, all the reports from his personal efforts in pre-season suggest he is doing everything he can to put the wrongs right.

With the young squad Pochettino currently has at his disposal, he will be relying on the very few experienced players in his ranks to rely on in key moments.

One of these is certainly Sterling, and he has started this campaign on the right foot for sure.
