Chelsea must make signing they’ve not done since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, it can solve huge problem

Even though Chelsea have been busy with new signings so far this summer, there is definitely still room for improvement in the squad.

The Blues hierarchy deserves credit for how swiftly they have acted in the transfer window with some new recruits even making an impact at this summer’s Club World Cup tournament. Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, signed from Ipswich Town and Brighton, respectively, have played important roles in guiding Chelsea to Sunday’s Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite the fact that Delap, Pedro and Jamie Gittens have been added to the squad at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea could still add another attacking option before the summer window shuts.

However, we think that the perfect opportunity may have presented itself for Enzo Maresca’s side to strengthen a defensive position ahead of next season.

Chelsea should be all over Nicolas Tagliafico

Without a doubt, Chelsea desperately need to sign a new left-back as a priority because Marc Cucurella has been overworked across the last year. It would be a major concern if the new season begins and he still doesn’t have a genuine understudy at full-back.

We would urge the club’s recruitment team to check on Nicolas Tagliafico, 32, as a possible transfer target.

The experienced left-back, who is currently a free agent after leaving Lyon in the summer, could be great competition and cover for Cucurella. At the moment, there are no transfer rumours linking him with a move to West London, though.

Instead, journalist Ben Jacobs reports via X that Everton and Roma have expressed interest in signing Tagliafico on a free transfer, but discussions have not advanced with either.

Tagliafico, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, is a proven left-back who can get up and down. In terms of his club career, he was arguably at his very best for Ajax earlier in his career.

Incidentally, Chelsea have not signed a player aged 30 or above since they signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was 33 at the time, from Barcelona in September 2022.

Even though the Blues have focused on signing young stars in recent windows, we would love to see them make an exception for Tagliafico. If they did, he would be the first 30+ Chelsea signing since Aubameyang.

Chelsea have tried and failed to sign AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, the 30-year-old goalkeeper, so far this summer. It’s an interesting nudge to suggest the club may be prepared to sign older profiles if they are the right fit.

Nicolas Tagliafico previously linked with Chelsea

There may not be any recent rumours linking Tagliafico with Chelsea, but he’s someone the club are aware of based off previous speculation from the past.

Back in January 2022, Chelsea had Tagliafico on their transfer radar when he was playing in Ajax colours.

We would like to think the Argentine defender would be a perfect fit to cover for Cucurella next season, especially because of his European experience and know-how in the biggest games.

The injection of older players into the young Blues squad should be seriously considered.
