A year is a long time in football, especially when you’re a Chelsea supporter.

There’s been so much turbulence at Chelsea under this ownership that it’s hard to keep track.

If you rewind to nearly a year ago, there were plenty of people questioning and doubting Conor Gallagher’s ability.

Now, the 24-year-old’s gone from zero to hero to become one of the most key individuals at Stamford Bridge.

We agree that his first season in Chelsea’s first team last year did present a lot of challenges, where he struggled for any kind of form or consistency.

However, credit to the England international for turning things around completely. He’s actually one of the rare consistent performers in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad this campaign. Pat Nevin has named Gallagher, Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto as Chelsea’s best players so far this year, via BBC Radio 5 Live.

We’d now argue Chelsea simply can’t afford to lose Gallagher. Therefore, all the speculation about his future is very worrying.

In our view, Gallagher’s got a massive future ahead of him at Chelsea and his development in the last year is a sign of better things to come.

The all-action box-to-box central midfielder is the type of profile we need in the squad.

He bleeds blue courtesy of his rise from academy product to first-team regular. Also, you can guarantee he’ll cover every blade of grass out on the pitch.

The Athletic claimed in February that Gallagher is one of the Chelsea stars that the club view as a great option to sell for financial reward. In fact, they added it would take a big turnaround for him to still be at the Bridge next season.

However, CaughtOffside since reported that there’s now a possibility around contract talks that could result in Gallagher staying.

No Chelsea player has played more games than Gallagher this season (38).

The England star has weighed in with four goals and seven assists, particularly thriving when he gets to play the No 10 position. His versatility means he drops deeper in midfield at times, too.

Our pick would be Cole Palmer as Chelsea’s outstanding individual this campaign. Gallagher definitely belongs on the podium, though!
