Enzo Fernandez is slowly morphing into Cesc Fabregas, one stat from Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Southampton proves it

Enzo Fernandez helped Chelsea to beat Southampton 4-0 and climb back into the top four on Tuesday.

Enzo Maresca‘s side have not been in great form, losing their last two Premier League games before their clash against Southampton.

However, they got back to winning ways on Tuesday night after goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella. Nkunku really impressed against Ivan Juric’s men, grabbing both a goal and an assist.

Fernandez was unable to get his name on the scoresheet, but the midfielder still ended up having a very good game. He put in a performance that another World Cup winner, Cesc Fabregas, would have been proud of.

Enzo Fernandez’s passing on point in Southampton win

Fabregas is one of the best passers and creators that the Premier League has ever seen.

It has taken a while, but Fernandez is now starting to influence games in a very similar way to Fabregas.

Under Maresca, the 24-year-old has been so creative, and it was no different in Chelsea’s latest victory at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez finished the game with an impressive seven key passes recorded, four more than any other player on the pitch that night. The Argentine also created two big chances.

Southampton are not the strongest team — the Saints are currently bottom of the Premier League table — but take nothing away from Fernandez’s latest outing. He is exactly what this Chelsea side needs: someone who can really punish the lower outfits in the division.

Fabregas used to do it all of the time, breaking down low blocks with defence-shattering passes. Southampton are perhaps a bit more expansive compared to some of the English teams the former Chelsea and Spain midfielder used to go up against, but Fernandez looks more than capable of helping the Blues to deal with deep backlines.

Fernandez is also beginning to score more goals, netting in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.

Gianfranco Zola has already compared Enzo Fernandez to Cesc Fabregas

Gianfranco Zola saw similarities between Fernandez and Fabregas long before the Argentina international tore Southampton apart.

When Zola spoke about Fernandez in 2023, the Chelsea legend said: “I was so impressed with his qualities. The speed of mind when he’s playing… In a way he reminds me of Cesc Fabregas.”

Fabregas won two Premier League titles and one FA Cup during his time in west London. Hopefully Fernandez can follow suit.
