Mauricio Pochettino should be starting £30m player in Chelsea’s defence vs Newcastle tonight

Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to field an extremely strong side for the EFL Cup quarter-final tonight at Stamford Bridge against Newcastle United.

It is likely there will be not too many changes made from the side who started against Sheffield United, when they returned to winning ways in the Premier League

One of the most notable omissions from the starting XI was Christopher Nkunku, after it became clear that he was going to be part of the matchday squad.

Second half goals from Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson saw the Frenchman not needed, with it likely a risk to be bringing him on in the first place.

However, the boss has hinted that he will be playing some part tonight when they welcome Eddie Howe’s side.

If there is one position that the Blues could look to change from last time out it would be at right-back, after the manager started Axel Disasi there on Saturday.

Gusto should start vs Newcastle

The Frenchman can fulfil the position to an extent when required, however very much lacks the attacking capabilities that are held by Reece James.

Obviously though, they will be without the club captain for a number of months, and will need to look elsewhere for a deputy.

If fit, they should look no further than Malo Gusto, who was named on the bench last time out.

However, with him being back in full training for a while now, he should be given the opportunity to start against Newcastle tonight.

Despite playing probably more than he would have expected when he joined this summer, he has not disappointed and shown he can play a key role when called upon.

With James out for some time now, seeing Gusto in action could be about to become a regularity for Chelsea fans in the coming weeks.
