The two winners and one loser from Chelsea selling Renato Veiga with youngster in line to take his role

It is looking increasingly likely that Chelsea will sell Renato Veiga to another club this summer.

Veiga spent the second half of last season out on loan at Juventus and could now leave Stamford Bridge permanently.

It is thought that Veiga is keen on a move to Atletico Madrid, who are being heavily linked with him.

Should the defender depart west London as expected, there could be a couple of winners and at least one loser at Chelsea from his sale.

Winners

Josh Acheampong

It has been claimed that there is a belief at Chelsea that Josh Acheampong can cover Marc Cucurella and play at left-back.

That could mean more opportunities for the 19-year-old next season, opportunities that would be blocked if Veiga remains. If you are Acheampong, then, Veiga leaving Chelsea would be a good thing.

Todd Boehly

Chelsea want to sell Veiga for around £35m in this transfer window. That would see them make a hefty profit after spending just £12m on him last year.

That would not be bad, given the Portuguese has only made 18 appearances for the club. As businessmen, it would be a very good look for Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Loser

Enzo Maresca

If there is one loser from Chelsea’s potential sale of Veiga, then it is likely to be Enzo Maresca. The Chelsea head coach will be losing a very versatile defender who is able to play at left-back and centre-back.

Veiga stands at 6’3″; he has the height and physicality to play in the Premier League. The Portugal international is definitely someone Maresca could utilise if he stays.

Despite not giving him too many starts last season, Maresca is a fan of Veiga. But his failure to hand the former Basel man a regular spot is one reason why we have arrived at this point.

All in all, a Veiga exit will benefit one or two at the club, but Maresca could suffer from it.
