Xabi Alonso is likely to be a very happy man right now, with Chelsea set to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Rogers is joining the Blues in a record £117m deal, but he is an exciting attacker who can play in multiple positions across the frontline.
With that in mind, then, how could Alonso use the 23-year-old next season?
CHELSEA FANS: How are we feeling about this?😮
£117m out of absolutely nowhere!
Attacking midfielder
While Rogers is a very versatile footballer, his best position is the No.10 role. With his dribbling and long-shot ability, he can cause absolute havoc there.
If Alonso uses a 4-2-3-1 formation in the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, Rogers is in with a shout of playing behind the striker. However, the expectation will be for Cole Palmer to start there.
Left winger
In a 4-2-3-1 set-up, Rogers starting as a left winger seems the more likely scenario. Again, the England international drives with the ball extremely well, and with his powerful right foot, there is no reason why he cannot cut in and also score long shots from there.
With Alejandro Garnacho expected to leave Chelsea, the Blues need another player who can operate on the left and Rogers clearly has the characteristics to be deployed there.

Inside forward
Of course, there is no guarantee that Alonso will use a 4-2-3-1 formation at Chelsea. At Bayer Leverkusen, his preferred system was a 3-4-2-1, which helped the German club to win the Bundesliga title in 2024.

In that set-up at Chelsea, Rogers and Palmer could both play as inside forwards/10s operating in the left and right half-spaces. As a duo, they could cause backlines up and down the country a lot of problems.
Wherever Rogers plays at Stamford Bridge, he has the tools to be a real threat for the Blues. His transfer fee is obviously a huge one, but that now appears to be the Premier League market — £100m for any good player.
