Tottenham’s deal for Dominic Solanke proves Chelsea are linked with an absolute bargain

Chelsea are currently linked with a player in the transfer rumour mill that looks an absolute bargain when you compare it to Tottenham’s recent transfer business.

If Chelsea look across London to close rivals Spurs, they’ll see they’ve already made a few signings this summer to improve Ange Postecoglou’s squad. In particular, Dominic Solanke joined from Bournemouth in a high-profile switch.

Spurs secured the signing of Solanke in a £65m transfer (BBC), and only time will tell what sort of deal that is. He’s coming off a great individual season in Bournemouth colours, scoring 19 Premier League goals for them last term.

Incidentally, The Telegraph recently claimed that Chelsea were put off by Solanke’s price tag this summer. Eventually, their interest in re-signing the 26-year-old striker, who previously spent time in the Blues academy, faded away.

Dominic Solanke signing should open Chelsea’s eyes to Ivan Toney deal

As good as Solanke was last year, there’s no doubt his £65m price tag is a risk for Spurs when you consider he’s yet to consistently prove himself on the top stage.

In contrast, Chelsea are currently linked with Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who’s reportedly available for £20m cheaper.

The Sun claims this week that Chelsea are tempted by a move for Toney late in this summer transfer window. Apparently, Brentford want to get rid of the centre-forward, so may be willing to accept a fee as low as £45m.

On paper, Toney looks like a real bargain for £45m compared to Solanke at £65m. While the Brentford striker was with England at Euro 2024 this summer, the new Spurs signing was sat watching after being overlooked for the international squad.

We think Chelsea should seriously consider moving for the England international during what’s left of this window to land themselves a bargain deal.

Do Chelsea need another striker?

With 10 days left in the summer window, should the Blues go out and sign another centre-forward? The short answer is yes.

While Nicolas Jackson does provide a decent option for Chelsea, where he’ll hope to improve on last season’s tally of 17 goals across all competitions, the club still lacks a clinical frontman. In theory, Toney could be the man to solve that problem.

Alternatively, Enzo Maresca’s side are also linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed via X Chelsea could yet try to sign Osimhen.
