Chelsea were handed a big injury blow just hours before they took to the pitch to take on Tottenham in their last Premier League game.
Wesley Fofana was not part of the matchday squad despite only recently returning to action, with his nightmare run of injuries at Stamford Bridge carrying on.
Enzo Maresca confirmed after the game that he had suffered a more serious muscle injury than teammate Romeo Lavia, who has also been impacted by a setback in training.
Fofana’s absence saw Trevoh Chalobah impress against Spurs from the start, although there is no real expectation that he remains at the club in the long-term.
The Blues made great strides to sell Chalobah last summer, before recalling him from his loan at Crystal Palace.

Chelsea must prioritise signing Marc Guehi after Wesley Fofana injury
While at Selhurst Park, the English defender formed a strong partnership with Marc Guehi, a player who has made first team appearances for Chelsea before being allowed to leave.
The England international is firmly on the radar of the Blues ahead of what is set to be a busy summer transfer window.
Chelsea are confident Guehi wants the move, with him set to be wanted by a number of big sides at the end of the season.
It has previously been claimed that Palace were holding out for a fee of around £70m, however given the player’s contract will have just 12 months left that price may have come down now.
With links to the likes of Dean Huijsen as a potential centre-back signing too, Guehi provides Premier League experience which is so clearly missing at Stamford Bridge right now, despite quality littered through the squad.

Marc Guehi’s 2024/25 stats
Guehi has been part of a defence that have kept nine clean sheets this season, racking up more individual shutouts than any Chelsea player in the Premier League this season.
| Marc Guehi 24/25 PL stats | Total |
| Games | 28 |
| Clean sheets | 9 |
| Goals | 3 |
| Duels won | 148 |
| Recoveries | 126 |
| Pass accuracy | 83.9% |
There is no indication at this stage that Chelsea are looking to sell Fofana after his latest injury, however the amount of games he has missed since joining the club will be alarming.
Given the Blues are hoping to be competing in Europe for seasons to come, they need a squad to rely on in terms of fitness, and a new centre-back to meet that criteria should now be the priority.
