Chelsea are mulling over a potential transfer swoop this month to sign a £70m-rated defender.

Enzo Maresca is coaching a young and talented Chelsea squad this season, which is showing in glimpses that it’s got massive potential. However, there may still be one or two areas at Stamford Bridge that need improving.

Chelsea have been urged to sign a goalkeeper and centre-back by Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock because they’re two positions that need upgrades.

Now that the January transfer window is open, let’s see if the Blues decide to make any significant investments.

Chelsea sense golden chance to sign Marc Guehi

According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea may have an opportunity to sign Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi in January because fellow suitors won’t be spending big this month.

It is explained that Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United admire the 24-year-old defender. However, none of them are expected to dig deep into their pockets on marquee signings midway through this season.

The report says that Chelsea are contemplating a golden chance to try sign the Palace centre-back while the pathway to him is clear. If the Blues do make a move for Guehi in this window, they’ll be in pole position.

Apparently, Palace still have confidence that they’ll be able to keep their England international until the end of the campaign.

It was claimed by GiveMeSport in October that Palace value Guehi at around the £70m mark. In fairness, the central defender has been imperious in the Premier League during the past couple of seasons, plus he’s made himself a regular England starter.

Should Chelsea splash the cash for Marc Guehi?

First and foremost, Chelsea should be looking to go and sign a marquee centre-half in 2025, whether that’s in January or at the end of the season in the summer. The club needs another defender because of Wesley Fofana’s poor injury record.

Guehi is an intriguing target because he previously came through the Chelsea academy before moving on to carve out a senior career elsewhere.

On paper, the Palace and England star ticks so many boxes as a modern day defender. Micah Richards previously described Guehi as “very calm and composed” on BBC Sport, which is a perfect summary of his game. We’ve got no doubt he’d deal with the step up into the Chelsea team pretty effortlessly.

Chelsea fans are onboard with the idea of re-signing Guehi, so perhaps the club should ramp up their January interest to avoid a potential bidding war next summer.
