What Jamie Gittens can learn from Alejandro Garnacho’s disastrous campaign

Chelsea duo Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho are both wide men with a lot of potential, but the truth is they really disappointed last season.

In Gittens’ defence, he spent a lot of time on the sidelines because of injuries. Garnacho, though, got plenty of opportunities but could not take them.

Garnacho is now expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with the Blues looking to sell him after an underwhelming campaign. Gittens must now learn from his teammate’s mistakes to avoid suffering the same fate.

Jamie Gittens must be more direct and positive than Alejandro Garnacho at Chelsea next season

The main issue with Garnacho was his output. For example, in the Premier League, the Argentine only managed to score one goal in 24 outings.

However, Chelsea fans also got frustrated with his lack of directness and how negative his play was at times.

Garnacho is capable of beating his full-back, but Chelsea supporters did not see that happen too often last term. Instead, the former Manchester United man tended to stop with the ball and then make a pass that would slow down the attack.

It is a lesson for Gittens. If he does not run at defenders and take them on next season, Stamford Bridge will be on his back.

Jamie Gittens’ and Alejandro Garnacho’s dribbling numbers compared

Dribbling is Gittens’ best attribute, so the above should not be an issue for him. Being low on confidence could impact the England Under-21 international, but hopefully new manager Xabi Alonso can instil some in him.

As per Scout Lab, Gittens completed 2.39 successful dribbles per 90 minutes during the 2025/26 campaign, which is a pretty high number. In contrast, Garnacho was only making 0.99. That is very low for a wide attacker.

Chelsea are interested in signing Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United, but his potential arrival does not mean the club should give up hope on Gittens, who is an extremely talented dribbler.
