Josh Acheampong’s comments about his Chelsea teammate should serve as a timely reminder that the club pulled off a transfer masterstroke a year ago.
The Chelsea owners have come under some real scrutiny over the last few years at Stamford Bridge, especially when it comes to some of their decisions in the transfer market.
Without a doubt, the turnover of the Blues squad has been mind-blowing. The club continues to press down the accelerator and make frequent alterations in pursuit of success, though.
One positive is that there is still a core of academy success within the first-team squad, with Reece James and Levi Colwill being star individuals.
In addition, Josh Acheampong is an academy graduate who’s become a permanent member of the senior squad more recently. The versatile 19-year-old defender is now competing on a day-to-day basis in Enzo Maresca’s group.
Acheampong recently expressed his desire to stay at Chelsea because he loves the club, so supporters will hope he can enjoy a long and successful career with them.
Josh Acheampong hails the influence of Chelsea teammate Tosin Adarabioyo
During a recent interview, Acheampong has explained that Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, 27, has been a great mentor to him inside the dressing room.
Acheampong said via The Mirror: “Tosin is the oldest in the team. He gives me advice if I need to ask him any questions. He’ll get me in the gym and stuff like that, so he’s good. He’s known as Uncle Tosin.
“He gives advice like to stay focused. Always, every day, try your best, work your hardest, do extras.”
Acheampong looks at Chelsea captain James as a role model, but it’s interesting to hear he receives significant help from Tosin.
Tosin Adarabioyo signing on a free transfer was a masterstroke
It felt like a bit of a punt when Chelsea signed Tosin on a free transfer in June 2024. Well, a year on it now looks like an excellent piece of business from the club.
The 27-year-old centre-back has injected experience and leadership into a ridiculously young squad. In addition, he rarely lets the team down when he features, even chipping in with five goals as a defender.

Like Acheampong mentions above, Tosin is a mentor to a lot of the younger players.
Back in December 2024, Chelsea youngster Sam Rak-Sakyi praised Tosin’s influence by sharing he helped him whenever he’s around the senior dressing room. That was backed up in September when Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca described Tosin as one of the leaders at the football club.
It’s a reminder that you don’t always need to splash the cash to make shrewd signings. If the Blues can find another Tosin-type figure this summer, we would be all for it.
