Why Trevoh Chalobah is one of Chelsea’s most successful graduates despite criticism

Some of the criticism that Trevoh Chalobah has received from Chelsea supporters has just not been warranted.

Chalobah may not have to worry about that for much longer, with the defender reportedly closing in on a move to Inter Milan.

There was also interest from Cesc Fabregas’ Como, but Inter appear to have won the race for Chalobah.

Many Chelsea fans will have no issue with the centre-back departing. They have not been fully convinced with his defending.

However, there is no doubt that Chalobah is one of the more reliable centre-halves currently in Xabi Alonso’s squad. In fact, there was not a better central defender in the Chelsea dressing room last season.

Still, it was a very disappointing campaign for Chalobah and his teammates, but in the past, the 27-year-old has tasted success at Stamford Bridge.

Back in the 2024/25 campaign, he helped Chelsea to win both the Club World Cup and Conference League trophies. Under Thomas Tuchel, Chalobah also won the UEFA Super Cup and another Club World Cup.

In total, Chalobah has made 151 appearances for Chelsea, being trusted by two top managers in Tuchel and Enzo Maresca.

You would not think so after constant criticism from Chelsea supporters, but Chalobah has easily been one of the best Cobham graduates to have played in the Blues’ first team.

Chelsea should be getting rid of the likes of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile before selling Chalobah, but they can, of course, make pure profit from offloading their academy product.

The fact that Inter, one of Europe’s biggest clubs, are signing Chalobah for £30m is proof in itself that he has been a hit at Stamford Bridge.

At Chelsea, Chalobah has also gone on to become an England international, and he is currently with the Three Lions’ squad now for this year’s World Cup.

Chelsea fans should give Chalobah his flowers. They have not, though, and will not have a chance to next year by the look of things.
