‘Absolute disgrace’… Chelsea fans are in total agreement about ‘ridiculous’ refereeing decision vs Ipswich Town

Chelsea fans all share the same opinion on one refereeing decision in the 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town on Monday night.

Enzo Maresca’s side went 1-0 down in the 12th minute after Liam Delap converted smartly from the penalty spot.

It was also Blues transfer target Delap who won the penalty after goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen was alleged to have brought him down.

It’s an understatement to say that Chelsea fans were not happy with referee John Brooks’ decision, as we have showcased below.

Chelsea fans react to Ipswich Town penalty decision

Jorgensen put himself in an awkward position by sliding towards Delap but the contact was minimal, to say the least.

The Ipswich striker’s right leg was clipped by the goalkeeper, which gave the referee a decision to make. However, Chelsea supporters will argue that it wasn’t enough to bring him down.

Indeed, many Blues fans have taken to X to share their frustration at the decision that ultimately led to the team’s downfall.

One wrote: “That is an absolute disgrace. Up there with the worst decisions I’ve seen. Jorgensen is nowhere near him and actively moves away. Clear as day dive from Delap. Spineless VAR.”

Another added: “How is this a penalty? Not sure there’s any contact, certainly not enough for Delap to go down the way he does.”

“VAR prove to be useless again as they confirm the penalty! No proper contact and they decide that it is not worth overturning. Ridiculous,” one Chelsea fan Tweeted.

“Never a penalty. Delap dived. Joke of a ref,” a supporter said. “That may be the worst penalty call I’ve ever seen,” another posted.

One Blues fan commented: “That is one of the worst penalty decisions of the season; Jorgensen has come out and not touched Delap. Yet, it’s a penalty.”

Chelsea now have penalty problem under Enzo Maresca

While seemingly every Chelsea supporter thinks Ipswich shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty today, it’s clearly an issue that needs addressing.

Maresca’s team have now conceded as many penalties in the first half of the 2024/25 season (five) as the entirety of the 2023/24 season.

Plus, Wolves are the only Premier League team to have given away more penalties than the Blues. This is not good reading at all.

Chelsea were never title contenders, as they have repeated in recent weeks, but these costly mistakes could soon make even Champions League qualification more complicated.
