Cole Palmer explains the ‘gameplan’ Enzo Maresca used to beat PSG in Club World Cup final

The Club World Cup final ended in victory for Chelsea after they managed to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0.

Goals from Cole Palmer, who netted twice, and Joao Pedro saw Chelsea defeat PSG to claim the Club World Cup trophy at the MetLife Stadium.

Palmer was once again the star for the Club World Cup winners, but the attacking midfielder has put the Blues’ victory down to Enzo Maresca‘s excellent gameplan.

Palmer was named in WhoScored’s Team of the Round for the semi-finals after a strong display against Fluminense, but the 23-year-old went up another level on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca knew what spaces to exploit during Chelsea vs PSG

Both of Palmer’s goals against PSG came from the right and that was all part of Maresca’s gameplan, according to the Englishman.

Discussing his two strikes after the game, Palmer told DAZN: “The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.”

Overall, Palmer had a good tournament, but he was not the only Chelsea player to thrive in the US.

New signing Joao Pedro also impressed after scoring three goals, including his chip against Gianluigi Donnarumma in the final.

Pedro Neto shone, too, with the Portugal international also netting three times at the Club World Cup.

Cole Palmer convinced Enzo Maresca is building something special

After winning both the Club World Cup and Conference League trophies, Palmer is tipping Maresca to create something amazing at Chelsea.

In the same post-match interview with DAZN, Palmer said: “He is building something special, something important.”

It was Malo Gusto who set up Palmer’s first goal, but the defender could leave Stamford Bridge during this transfer window.

It has been reported that Bayern Munich have enquired about signing Gusto, who would not need replacing if he does depart. Chelsea already have Josh Acheampong, who can cover Reece James in the right-back position.

Gusto will be celebrating now, though, along with Maresca, Palmer and the rest of the Chelsea team after a hugely successful season, with the Blues claiming two major honours and qualifying for the Champions League.
