Cole Palmer was rested for Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

While Cole Palmer did travel with the squad to St James’ Park and was named on the bench, he was an unused substitute.

Finding themselves 2-0 down early in the game, Chelsea fans were hoping for Palmer to be introduced in the second half.

However, Enzo Maresca decided that he would give his star man the whole night off, which proved costly in the end.

Jason Cundy on Cole Palmer staying on the bench

Chelsea really needed Palmer out there in the second half after going 2-0 down. With his attacking threat, the Blues could have easily scored a goal or two.

It was only last weekend when the attacking midfielder managed to bag the winning goal against the same opposition in the Premier League.

Had Chelsea pulled a goal back, Jason Cundy thinks Maresca may have considered bringing Palmer on.

Speaking about the game on talkSPORT, the former Chelsea defender said: “Palmer sat on the bench. I’m not even sure Palmer warmed up, I’m not even sure he warmed up, mate. Had it got to 2-1, he might have brought him on.”

Maresca has explained why he opted against subbing Palmer on. By not doing so, the 22-year-old will at least be fresh for Chelsea’s next Premier League game, which is against Manchester United on Sunday.

Should Enzo Maresca have brought Cole Palmer on?

Having made Palmer travel all the way to Newcastle, it seems like such a waste not to have used him.

Maresca has missed out on a good opportunity to win a trophy here, especially with Manchester City being knocked out.

Had Palmer played in the second half, it could have been a different result. Joao Felix wasted an easy chance towards the end of the match. What would have happened if Palmer was in his position?

Fortunately, still being in the Conference League and with the FA Cup to come, Chelsea’s chances of winning silverware this season are not over. But you cannot help but feel that the Carabao Cup was there for the taking.
