Sky Sports pundit claims £45m Chelsea player really let Newcastle off the hook last night

Chelsea made life extremely difficult for themselves in their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United last night.

Enzo Maresca‘s men found themselves 2-0 down before half an hour had even been played. Trying to play out of the back cost them, with Newcastle winning the ball back high up the pitch before Alexander Isak opened the scoring.

Axel Disasi then scored an own goal, resulting in Chelsea going into the break 2-0 down.

Yet there was still a way back into the game for them in the second half, but the Blues could not capitalise on the golden opportunity that they had. Chelsea fans were chanting for Cole Palmer, but those chants fell on deaf ears after Maresca decided to leave him on the bench.

Darren Ambrose on Joao Felix’s wasted opportunity

Joao Felix was the man who could have got Chelsea back into the match when he found himself facing Nick Pope alone.

However, the forward failed to take advantage and put the ball wide. “He’s let Newcastle off the hook,” Darren Ambrose said on Sky Sports. “This could have been so different.”

Chelsea fans were not impressed with Felix, who did nothing to convince Maresca that he should be starting in the Premier League.

All of the 24-year-old’s appearances in the top flight so far this season have come from off the bench.

Joao Felix not the only wasteful Chelsea player at St James’ Park

A forward of Felix’s calibre really should be scoring that kind of chance. However, he was not the only Chelsea player who did not have his shooting boots on.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had a really good opportunity to score at the beginning of the game. Had he taken it, the match could have ended very differently.

Maresca decided to use Dewsbury-Hall on the right, but it did not work out. He was eventually substituted for Noni Madueke in the second half.

Going forward, Chelsea fans will want to see better from Dewsbury-Hall and Felix, who cost the club £45m following his move from Atletico Madrid during the summer.
