Pat Nevin explains what Nicolas Jackson is now starting to do at Chelsea after West Ham win

Nicolas Jackson’s finishing in Chelsea’s 3-0 win against West Ham United on Saturday impressed many.

That is largely because the striker’s finishing is not always the greatest. In fact, before the game, John Obi Mikel discussed Jackson’s shooting, stating that it was an area where he needs to improve.

Jackson clearly heard the former Chelsea player loud and clear, taking his two goals against the Hammers well.

However, another former Chelsea player, Pat Nevin, liked something else he saw from the 23-year-old on the day.

Pat Nevin on Nicolas Jackson’s movement

Nevin feels that Jackson did not always make the right runs last season.

However, he has praised Jackson for making a run that opened up space for Cole Palmer on Saturday, claiming that it was not something that the Senegal international was doing in the previous campaign.

Discussing Jackson on talkSPORT, Nevin said: “That movement for the creation of the goal for Palmer, yeah, absolutely spot on, because he wasn’t doing that last season. It was very individual, a lot of the times he was going for goal when he shouldn’t have been going for goal, but he didn’t do that this time.

“He created the space by running across to his right, allowing Cole Palmer, who did a brilliant job getting there, to be slid in. That looks like a player who’s becoming a more complete player, which Chelsea fans certainly didn’t see.”

Demba Ba was also in love with Jackson’s movement, especially for his second goal.

Nicolas Jackson and Jhon Duran among Premier League’s top scorers

Unsurprisingly, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is currently the Premier League’s top scorer.

At this rate, the Norway international will have the Golden Boot wrapped up by December. Below him, though, it is quite tight right now.

Luis Diaz has five goals to his name and is then followed by Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Jackson, who are all on four.

Chelsea were keen on Duran during the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialise. If the 20-year-old maintains the goalscoring form that he is in, then maybe the Blues will consider making a move for him in January.

For now, though, Enzo Maresca will just have to remain content with Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, and the Italian has good reason to.

Jackson is obviously on fire at this moment in time, while Nkunku scored the winner for Chelsea last weekend. They are a couple of really good centre-forward options, even if the latter is not a natural No.9.
