Chelsea lost to Bayern Munich in their first Champions League game of the 2025/26 season.
Harry Kane scored twice to inspire Bayern to victory over Chelsea and secure all three points for the German side.
The Blues’ backline did not have the best game, with Trevoh Chalobah scoring an own goal. Marc Cucurella also had a difficult outing.
Cucurella was praised by the Spanish media for one of his performances during the international break, but Chelsea supporters did not see that Cucurella at the Allianz Arena, unfortunately.

Pat Nevin on Marc Cucurella’s battle against Michael Olise
Cucurella had to go one-v-one with Michael Olise on more than one occasion, often losing the battle.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin felt sorry for the full-back, stating that his head was starting to get “scrambled” after going up against the France international.
Commentating on the game for the BBC, Nevin said: “Cucurella got himself in a terrible position there and Olise almost got away. I think his head is getting a little bit scrambled.”
Later on in the match, the Chelsea legend also went on to add: “Olise is an utter joy to watch. Everything is done at a calm pace. He is completely in control, not just of the ball but of everything around him.
“He’s not even needing to take Cucurella on, he’s just pulling the Chelsea defence apart.”
Olise is not the only elite winger Cucurella has struggled against. Cucurella recently name-checked Ousmane Dembele when discussing his toughest opponent.

Marc Cucurella still one of the best left-backs in the world
It was obviously not Cucurella’s best game, but Olise has the ability to terrorise any defender with his terrific dribbling.
Overall, Cucurella is still one of the top left-backs in the world. You would expect the Spain international to bounce back, having a great opportunity to do so on Saturday when Chelsea take on an out-of-form Manchester United side.
While Cucurella may have struggled, Cole Palmer put in another bright performance. Before Chelsea faced Bayern, Harry Kane spoke about Palmer, comparing the 23-year-old to Olise.
As Kane discussed Palmer and Olise, he said: “Two great players. They have a lot of similar attributes.”
Next up for Chelsea in the Champions League is a home game against Benfica, while Bayern take on David Luiz’s Pafos.
