Jason Cundy blamed the referee for the first goal Chelsea conceded in their 3-1 loss against Bayern Munich.

The Blues kickstarted the group phase of the Champions League with an away defeat at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. Even though Enzo Maresca’s side played some bright football in moments, they ultimately came up short against the German giants.

Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal in the 20th minute broke the deadlock before Harry Kane added Bayern’s second from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

Cole Palmer did reduce the deficit to 2-1 with a magical individual goal as he shone bright on the European stage. Kane’s pre-match assessment of Palmer is that he can become a “world-class player”, which becomes more and more evident the more he plays in big matches.

Eventually, Bayern and England striker Kane added his second of the match with a clinical finish in the second period to clinch three points in a 3-1 scoreline.

Jason Cundy fuming with refereeing decision as Chelsea lose to Bayern

According to Jason Cundy, Chelsea were very unfortunate with how they went behind against Bayern.

For the first goal, Moises Caicedo was harshly judged to have committed a foul outside the box. The resulting free kick had to be retaken when it struck referee Jose Maria Sanchez at the first attempt. The match official opted for a quick drop ball, which eventually led to Michael Olise crossing the ball and it deflecting in off Blues defender Chalobah.

When discussing Chalobah’s own goal on Chelsea’s official app (8:50pm, 17 September), Cundy said: “Here is my issue with the goal. One, it’s not a free kick on Moises Caicedo. He wins the ball cleanly. It’s a terrible decision. Two, why is the referee in the way of the free kick? That drop ball was a free kick that was taken quickly. The reason we are out of position is he just drops the ball.

“I thought the referee had an absolute stinker. Giving the free kick and allowing the drop ball to happen the way it did so quickly.”

Trevoh Chalobah has very tough outing

Even though Chalobah has excelled in the Premier League during the opening weeks of the season, he just had a night to forget in Europe.

The 26-year-old central defender netted an own goal when the ball deflected in off him. Also, he had several uncomfortable moments when defending against a lethal Bayern forward line.

Chelsea supporters criticised Chalobah, along with centre-half partner Tosin Adarabioyo, after the defeat against Bayern. While they usually stand up quite well as a defensive pair in domestic football, it remains to be seen if they can replicate that on the Champions League stage against the elite sides.
