‘Walk away’: BBC pundit not impressed by 20-year-old Chelsea player against Tottenham

Mark Schwarzer criticised Chelsea’s Levi Colwill for what he did during last night’s away win against Tottenham.

Chelsea eventually dispatched nine-man Tottenham by beating them 4-1 in the Premier League, but the game was on a knife edge throughout.

The frantic opening 35 minutes included Cole Palmer’s equaliser cancelling out Dejan Kulusevski’s opning goal. Also, Cristian Romero was shown a red card for his poor challenge on Enzo Fernandez.

As tempers spilled over, Levi Colwill was involved in a fiery encounter with Pape Matar Sarr on the stroke of half-time. Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino made the sensible decision to substitute him off at the interval because he was on a booking and visibly angry.

Following Destiny Udogie’s red card early into the second period, Chelsea finally dispatched nine-man with Nicolas Jackson’s late hat-trick.

Retired goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who was working as a BBC pundit, couldn’t believe what he was seeing from Colwill.

It was pretty naive from the 20-year-old defender to snap in a game that was rising in tempers.

Schwarzer told BBC Radio 5 Live (9:03pm, 6 November): “I would be very surprised [if this stayed 11 v 10]. Chelsea having the man advantage and haven’t made use of that yet. Colwill there should be thinking, ‘we’ve got the man advantage’ so just walk away. What is Colwill doing? Why is he even involved? Just walk away.”

Speaking via Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (9:10pm, 6 November), Jamie Carragher said it was “brilliant” from Pochettino to substitute Colwill off the field.

We love seeing Chelsea academy graduates show serious fight and heart, especially when it comes to London derbies.

The left-footed defender will learn with more experience that he needs to play smarter, particularly away from home when the crowd is putting pressure on the referee.

Thankfully, Chelsea did keep their composure and come away from Spurs will all three points.
