Why Enzo Maresca was fuming with Brentford staff during Chelsea’s 0-0 draw

There were multiple reasons for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to be frustrated as his side were held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford.

The manager’s decision to bench a number of his biggest players raised eyebrows amongst many. Cole Palmer, Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson were all absent from the starting side.

Maresca decided to give a number of fringe players their chance to make a statement, however the likes of Christopher Nkunku failed to deliver.

Chelsea fans were unhappy with what they were seeing from inside the stadium, as the wait for an away win in 2025 continues.

The Blues remain in the top four following their result, however are vulnerable to the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle behind them.

The Blues were unable to create anything of note in the first half before they brought some of their big names on, with the manager not hiding his frustration at what was going on.

NBC Sports commentator Andy Bishop noted midway through the first half that the Italian was making his feelings known to the fourth official, with him claiming that these complaints were a result of Brentford’s coaching staff.

He went on to say that the Bees coaches were complaining a lot at what was going on. The game was very much a stop-start affair in the early stages.

Chelsea are back in action again on Thursday night, which perhaps explained why Maresca decided to make a number of changes to his starting side.

The likes of Palmer and Jackson have just returned from injuries, and it is imperative that they stay fit given how poor the Blues have looked when they have not been available.

It has been clear that the manager is looking to protect his players as the games come thick and fast, with them looking to avoid the nightmare scenario which has impacted Wesley Fofana.

Fofana is out now until the end of the season after just a couple of games back in the side, hinting towards the fact that he was rushed back too soon.
