£50m Chelsea player should be really worried after Enzo Maresca’s first press conference

The new Chelsea manager has finally addressed the media for the first time since taking over the club.

Enzo Maresca answered some questions ahead of his first friendly in charge of the Blues tonight against Wrexham.

Supporters are keen to see the new system in place, with many sources at the club excited about what Maresca can bring to them this season.

When asked about the potential way he will line up, the Italian hinted he had a plan to feature club captain Reece James in an inverted full-back role that has been typical of his football so far in his career.

An open training session saw Malo Gusto line up in this position too, showing that the boss wants a number of options available to play there.

Maresca’s comments worrying for Ben Chilwell

This could cause issues for Ben Chilwell, who is known predominantly as a player who thrives when attacking in a wide role.

His biggest competition for a place in the side is Marc Cucurella, who will debuting a new look after Spain’s victory at the European Championships.

Towards the end of last season, the big-money signing of 2022 was playing some of his best football at Stamford Bridge when he came inside to help out in midfield, and this will certainly be in Maresca’s thinking.

However, this is something that has never really been seen in Chilwell’s game, and the fact that reports have not disappeared about a potential exit will only fuel further worry.

Maresca praised Chilwell in training

Maresca was overheard praising Chilwell in an early session after he returned for training very early on, and the fact Cucurella has not yet joined up with the squad gives him an opportunity to impress.

After being signed for £50m, there was plenty of hope that the former Leicester City man would be the answer to their left-back woes for some time.

However, this is no doubt a big summer for the England international, with his career in West London looking to be hanging on by somewhat of a thread.
