£85m striker Chelsea reportedly wanted in January now has the most goal contributions in Europe

One striker who Chelsea were reportedly looking to sign in the January transfer window is certainly enjoying a season to remember so far.

In fact, following his most recent performance he is now the forward who has the most combined goals and assists of anyone this season in Europe.

Chelsea were linked with a number of names over the summer to try and address their issue in front of goal, with them considering both long-term and short-term options.

One name which continued to crop up in reports was Viktor Gyokeres, with him finding his feet in the upper echelons of European football following his move from Championship side Coventry City over the summer.

Many perhaps will have not expected him to take to life at Sporting Lisbon quite as well as he has, with him notching up more goals and assists than appearances made in all competitions.

It was claimed by some close to the potential deal in Portugal that Chelsea were the only side really who had the financial power to pull of a deal that the club would accept.

Gyokeres most goals and assists in Europe

Fabrizio Romano has reinstated that his current release clause sits at around £85m.

He said: “Viktor Gyokeres has most G/A contributions with 38 this season in all competitions at Sporting. Swedish striker has scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists in his first season in Portugal, after joining in the summer for record fee from Coventry. Release clause: €100m.”

It remains to be seen if the Blues return to the market for the Sweden international at the end of the season, with these few months very important for them to decide who they want to sign at the end of the campaign.

It is thought by many that the number one target for the club at this stage is Victor Osimhen, however it remains to be seen if his underwhelming African Cup of Nations campaign has impacted that interest.
