Journalist Nathan Gissing has now claimed that there seems to have been some sort of illness bug going round the Chelsea camp before last night’s game.
He took to Twitter to state that another player who started the game was struggling with illness as well as Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez was substituted in the first half, with Sky Sports quick to state that the issue was down to sickness.
However, the emotional look on his face which followed suggested that it could perhaps be a bit more of a serious issue.
Pundits noticed after the game that he was upset despite the Blues having just won on penalties against Newcastle in the EFL Cup quarter-final.
It soon emerged that the player has been featuring in recent weeks with an ongoing groin problem, and could now be set for a spell on the sidelines to let it heal.
However, it later emerged that he was not the only player who had an illness to worry about going into last night’s match.
Badiashile also ill
Gissing took to Twitter to state that teammate Benoit Badiashile was also under the weather before kick-off, despite starting the game.
He said: “Just like Enzo Fernandez, Badiashile wasn’t feeling very well before the game, but he wanted to play regardless.”
The Frenchman had a rough evening last night, which stemmed from his uncharacteristic error that led to their opponents opening the scoring.
However, he recovered and stepped up in the big moments at the back to help the Blues stay in the game, and ultimately steal it on penalties.
With plenty of injury concerns at the back, Chelsea fans will be hopeful he is firing on all cylinders for their return to Premier League action when they make the trip to Wolves on Christmas Eve.
